Colombia kicked off their quest for the 2026 FIFA World Cup with a spirited 3-1 win over Uzbekistan, taking an early advantage in Group F. The match was a lively affair, with Colombia ultimately triumphing despite facing a determined opponent. Daniel Muñoz opened the scoring shortly before halftime, capitalizing on a precisely timed pass from Luis Díaz to put Colombia ahead. Although the South American team enjoyed the lion’s share of possession, they found it challenging to penetrate Uzbekistan’s well-organized defense for much of the game.

After the break, Uzbekistan upped their game and managed to draw level. Abbosbek Fayzullaev headed in the equalizer following a save by Camilo Vargas, briefly putting the match back in the balance. Nevertheless, Colombia was quick to react. Luis Díaz, who had already assisted the first goal, found the net himself with a low shot, following a swift counterattack initiated by Gustavo Puerta. This goal restored Colombia’s lead and showcased their ability to respond under pressure.

In the dying moments of the match, Colombia secured the victory when Jaminton Campaz scored with a header, thanks to the persistent efforts of Juan Camilo Hernández. This late goal ensured all three points for Colombia and capped off a fine performance by Díaz, who left the field as the Player of the Match, having contributed both a goal and an assist.

The win places Colombia at the top of Group F, as the other group match between Portugal and the Democratic Republic of the Congo ended in a draw. While Colombia demonstrated their attacking prowess and maintained control throughout much of the game, they will need to improve their finishing as they face increasingly difficult opposition in the tournament ahead.
