Next week, Oman will take a significant step forward in its renewable energy journey with the launch of the “Imtidad” Community Solar Power Stations Programme. Spearheaded by the Public Services Regulation Authority (PSRA) in collaboration with licensed electricity providers, this initiative is designed to increase public involvement in the adoption of clean energy. It offers both residents and businesses the opportunity to benefit from solar energy without the necessity of installing solar panels on their premises.

The programme operates on a model where participants receive credits on their electricity bills, thanks to the power generated by community solar stations that feed into the national grid. The initiative aims to lower energy expenses, promote the use of clean energy, and aid Oman in its shift towards a more sustainable energy framework. The inaugural project, the Wadi Al Kabir Community Solar Power Station, marks a landmark as the first community-based solar facility under the Imtidad programme and in the country as a whole. Plans are underway to replicate this model with similar projects throughout Oman.

Officials highlight that the programme will bring about numerous advantages, including economic growth, social development, and environmental improvements. By encouraging investment in renewable energy, supporting local enterprises, creating employment opportunities, and boosting energy efficiency, the initiative promises to be beneficial on multiple fronts. It is also in line with Oman’s broader energy diversification strategy and sustainability commitments, as well as the objectives outlined in Oman Vision 2040.

Community solar projects like these are anticipated to enhance the accessibility of renewable energy, particularly for those households and businesses that do not have the necessary space or resources for private solar panel installations. In doing so, they will also contribute significantly to achieving national targets for clean energy adoption.
