President Donald Trump is touting his upcoming “big meeting” with Chinese President Xi Jinping, predicting a successful outcome that will be “great for everybody.”
The President, speaking in Japan, confirmed the talks are set for Thursday in South Korea. The two leaders will meet on the sidelines of the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit.
This meeting is set against a tense backdrop of renewed trade hostilities. The US has threatened 100% tariffs on Chinese goods, effective November 1.
This threat was a direct response to China’s decision to tighten export controls on its supply of rare earth minerals. The dispute has escalated with US port fees and Chinese countermeasures.
Trump, however, was all optimism. “I think it’s going to work out very well,” he said, adding that both he and Xi have “a lot to talk about.”
