A Florida-based specialist in digestion has identified seven key fruits and vegetables that target two of the liver’s biggest challenges: inflammation and poor blood flow. These foods can help naturally strengthen the organ.
To fight inflammation, the expert recommends pomegranates. They are rich in specific polyphenols, such as ellagitannins and punicalagins, which studies suggest are effective at helping to calm the inflammatory signals that can affect the liver.
For boosting blood flow, the doctor suggests two foods. First, watermelon with lime. The citrulline in watermelon and vitamin C in lime work together to support nitric oxide production. Second, beetroot, which is loaded with nitrates that also support nitric oxide pathways.
The list includes other foods with complementary benefits. Beetroot also contains betaine, which helps the liver process fat. Raspberries are rich in fiber and anthocyanins, which help regulate blood sugar and improve fat processing.
Cranberries are also recommended for their prebiotic polyphenols, supporting the gut-liver axis. Apples with cinnamon support insulin sensitivity. Finally, strawberries with dark chocolate (70%+) are praised for their flavanols, which improve blood vessel function.
