China has denied Donald Trump’s allegations of “secret testing” after the former president vowed the U.S. would not be “the only country that doesn’t test.” Trump’s new directive for the U.S. to resume testing was based on these unverified claims.
“I don’t want to be the only country that doesn’t test,” Trump told CBS, after claiming that Russia, China, North Korea, and Pakistan were all actively testing nuclear weapons.
China’s foreign ministry provided a swift rebuttal. A spokesperson stated that China “upheld a self-defence nuclear strategy” and has remained committed to its pledge to suspend all nuclear testing.
Trump first announced the policy change on his social media platform, Truth Social. He claimed he “had no choice” but to instruct the “Department of War” to begin testing “immediately.”
He also boasted of the U.S. arsenal’s size, claiming it was the world’s largest and fully renovated. This escalation comes at a tense time, following Russia’s test of its new Burevestnik nuclear-powered missile.
