Speaking in Gyeongju, South Korea, Chinese President Xi Jinping emphasized that “dialogue is always better than confrontation.” His remarks at the APEC forum came after securing a one-year trade pact with US President Donald Trump.
Xi’s speech on Friday championed global cooperation. He urged nations to “join hands rather than letting go” and warned against “breaking supply chains.”
The new deal with the US underpins this message. It involves the US slashing some tariffs and export controls, a significant de-escalation of the trade war.
In exchange, China agreed to purchase US soybeans and, importantly, to pause new restrictions on rare earth exports. This commitment from Beijing averts a potential 100% US import tax.
The deal also includes a one-year US delay on a restrictive technology measure. Trump called the meeting “amazing” and announced an April visit to China, with Xi to visit the US afterward.
