In a recent development, Iran has leveled accusations against Qatar, claiming that the Gulf state is hindering efforts to determine the fate of three Iranian pilots who allegedly went missing amid the ongoing conflict. Iran maintains that these pilots disappeared during a military engagement, but Qatar has firmly dismissed these accusations, denying any involvement in detaining the pilots.
Mohammad Bagherzadeh, an official from the Iranian armed forces, expressed frustration over the prolonged delay, stating that an expert team from the Iranian Air Force has been waiting for months for clearance to travel to Qatar and conduct an investigation. He urged the Qatari authorities to grant access for the team to proceed with their inquiry and called upon the International Committee of the Red Cross to intervene in resolving the matter.
Iran has previously identified the remains of pilot Majid Kazemi, who was reportedly killed during an attack linked to the US Al Udeid Air Base located in Qatar. Meanwhile, Qatar’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson, Majed al-Ansari, has categorically denied any claims of Iranian pilots being held by the country. Al-Ansari explained that Qatar had made contact with the pilots after they were said to have violated Qatari airspace, stating that defensive measures were taken when attempts to communicate with the pilots went unanswered.
Qatari officials have noted that their search and rescue teams were actively involved in operations to find the missing pilots and any remains. Qatar claims to have cooperated with Iran in the repatriation of one pilot’s remains. Furthermore, Doha asserts that it had extended an invitation to Iranian authorities back in April to send a team to Qatar to receive details on the search and rescue efforts, but they allege that the offer was met with no response from Tehran.
This dispute arises amidst ongoing regional tensions involving Iran, the United States, and other neighboring countries, which have been escalating since the conflict broke out earlier this year. Qatar has been recognized for its diplomatic efforts aimed at reducing regional tensions and facilitating dialogue among the involved parties.
