Oman has taken a significant step toward addressing harmful social media content in the Gulf region by proposing unified guidelines for Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries. This proposal was unveiled during the 29th meeting of GCC Information Ministers in Manama, Bahrain, with Oman’s delegation led by Minister of Information Dr. Abdullah Nasser Al Harrasi.
The initiative aims to enhance media coordination and uphold regional unity by establishing a common framework for GCC countries to manage social media content effectively. The proposed guidelines focus on improving the monitoring and documentation of content violations, promoting accountability, and supporting appropriate legal actions in alignment with each member state’s national laws.
During the meeting, the ministers reaffirmed their dedication to fostering cooperation among GCC member states, emphasizing the importance of safeguarding regional security and stability. They highlighted the need for coordinated efforts to tackle misleading, offensive, and harmful content circulating through both traditional and digital media platforms.
The discussions also underscored the role of media organizations, journalists, and social media users in verifying information, depending on official sources, and avoiding the dissemination of material that could harm relations between Gulf countries. The ministers encouraged media entities to adapt to rapid advancements in digital media and artificial intelligence while reinforcing the role of official media in promoting public awareness and accurate information.
Additionally, the meeting emphasized the necessity of coordinated Gulf media efforts to address emerging digital challenges, protect shared interests, and strengthen ties among the peoples of GCC member states.
